In the event of a utility power outage, the truck can easily be configured to provide backup power. Connect a 12VDC to 120VAC sine wave inverter to the accessory battery and flip a switch to activate the BMS, turning on the DC converter and essentially providing up to 40KWh of stored energy. The BMS can be programmed to shut off at a low set point and the truck can be driven to another location for charging.
Conversion begins on August 2, 2008 and on August 6, 2011 the truck took its maiden voyage using lead-acid battery power. By the end of 2011 it has over 1000 miles of trouble-free operation.

2015 - After 4 years and 3000 electric miles the truck has been reliable, fun to drive and a great learning experience! The Trojan T125 flooded lead-acid batteries have reached the end of their useful life in the truck. Some of the battery terminals suffer from constant corrosion, causing a battery cable and a few terminal bolts needing to be replaced.

September 2016 - The truck is being updated with a new 50KWh LiFeYPO4 pack, MaxForcer ML 1,200Amp 200VDC motor controller and many other upgrades!

7/8/2018 -- Lithium test run... Wow!

8/13/2018 -- Over 600 miles on Lithium and counting! This truck is a blast to drive around town and on the highway. The controller is configured for 120KW to the motor.

10/21/2018 -- 1600+ miles on Lithium and now capable of using J1772 EVSE and Tesla HPWC.

March 2019 -- The truck is back on the road now that snow has melted and roads are free of salt. 110 electric miles the first weekend out. Over the winter I replaced a leaky grommet on the vacuum reservoir and leaky fitting on the power steering high pressure line.

August 2019 -- 152 electric miles driven in one day including a cruise down and then up Lake Shore Drive. Took advantage of some free charging at Volta stations located at Jewel and Whole Foods.

September 2019 -- 103mi trip. Gained 4% at a free Volta station while having lunch. Home with 30% battery. The truck now has over 3000 miles on lithium.

2020 -- Less driving this year than normal. Nearly 4k mi on lithium.

June 2023 -- Truck passes 12,000 electric miles
October 2024 -- 14,000 electric miles
