Vehicle | 1988 Pontiac Fiero
Motor | Advanced DC FB4001A Series Wound DC 9"

Batteries | 44 Thunder Sky 160AH, 3.40 Volt, Lithium Iron Phosphate After 10 months and >2000 miles of Lead Acid, one battery started failing, so it was time for a lithium upgrade. Redid the battery boxes from steel to aluminum. Lost 250lbs in weight, and more than doubled the range. AGM accessory battery.
System Voltage | 144 Volts
Charger | Elcon 1.5KW I went with an onboard "emergency" charger and have a Zivan NG3 offboard.
Heater | Ceramic. I gutted a small 1500w space heater I bought on ebay. When it was lead acid, it was useless. I considered alternatives, but in the end I kept with ceramic and hooked up more elements. It draws 13A when on and works a lot better.
DC/DC Converter | Zivan NG1
Instrumentation | E-xpert PRO Cheap digital voltmeters to show 12V and Pack Voltage Analog ammeter in the dash A couple of "idiot lights" Custom BMS. Real time voltage monitoring, J1772 and charger integration.
Top Speed | 70 MPH (112 KPH) could go faster
Acceleration | Respectable
Range | 50 Miles (80 Kilometers) Perfect for my daily commute (12 mi round trip), and in-town errands
EV Miles |
| ||||||||
Seating Capacity | 2 adults. Both the trunk and the spare tire were victims of the conversion.
Curb Weight | 2,850 Pounds (1,295 Kilograms) Estimate. Stock curb weight is around 2700lbs. Redid both front and rear springs for the lead acid. Now it rides way too high, especially in the front: will redo the front springs (again).
Tires | stock | ||||||||
Conversion Time | 18 months - first conversion 14 months - upgrade to lithium
Conversion Cost | Don't ask.
Additional Features | Clutchless design. Takes a little getting used to, but the Fiero transmission is pretty forgiving and I can easily shift in less than 2 seconds. |
