I am doing a race car type conversion to keep the weight down as much as possible. Running clutchless drive, with motor mounted in the front . Have gone through the 5-speed transmission and removed all but 2nd and 3rd gears. Will use double contactor for reverse. 9/5/06, changed to dc power 1200amp controller for more performance. 4/9/07,battery racks and boxes are in along with most components. Its time to start wiring! To date have removed just under 1,3oo lbs.I have my eye on another 90-100,but that comes after I get it certified. 7/4/07 Well, shes finally on the road!I know I'm going to be real happy, because pulling just 350amps, it accelerate faster than my truck ! Once the brushes are set it should really be a kick in the pants. I would like to thank Peter Senkowski for working with me on getting my(his really, he made it)raptor1200 controller and contactors wired correctly. Couldn't of done it without you ! Would also like to thank Al Godfrey For helping me understand series parallel battery wiring and the proper way to slow charge the paralleled pack in order to match the whole string. Oh yaa, I'm glad I didn't listen to you Al and put it all pack together and enjoy it as an "ice":) 9/07. Had a problem with Raptor controller. Over temp. light started coming on falsely. Have had it back for 200 miles and all seems fine again : ) Moved two more batteries to the back to lighten up the steering at parking lot speed. Bearing went bad in torque tube. Replaced with better quality sealed ones. 3/08. have had allot of battery issues this winter. Had 4 batteries so far replaced under warranty. Have finally found that my finish pulsed current was to high causing my batteries to vent excessively. Am sending charger out for reprogramming. I am updating the pictures to show off my new paint job. 12/08. Lets see..... Finally finished the manual brake conversion ! All new calipers, rotors and master cylinder. Car lost another 70lbs. in the process. 15lbs. of that was rotor weight, so that alone is like removing 75lbs. from the car. Battery pack is still going strong. I do have a weak pair of batteries in it,but with the PakTraker I know which pair they are and will replace them under warranty when necessary. Hopefully before spring I will have a Lithium pack in it and loose another 800+ lbs. ! Can wait :) Take a look at my Blog, I have all my build pictures their. 7/09 New pack is in and loving the new range and power. a new unforeseen problem ! I need to get my tachometer and rev-limiter installed. Being over 800lbs lighter it gets up to my rpm limit in 2nd and 3rd gears way to fast ! :) 9/30 Thankfully nothing new to report, other than putting over 11,000 miles this past year. Lithium packs range is a wonderful thing ! 9/22/2012 Well, a lot has changed this last year. My 30 year old transmission finally needed rebuilding.Turned out great, it has never been this quite and smooth. Lost my first Armature in wet weather. My fault, had changed motor brushes during the summer and didnt blow out all the carbon after they were set.Car sat in the rain for two days and shorted the Com. out . This spring and summer blew up my Raptor controller twice, then the builder discontinued it.So I pulled my Zilla out of my yet finished Cobra. Had to send in my Hairball twice due to manufacturing defects, but all is well now. I changed to Helwig Red top brushes and added a blower to my 9"adc to keep things cooler and help blow out carbon. 11/12/13: Car continuing to go strong. Should have 50,000 miles on current pack by years end. As long as I keep the range under 100 miles, all is well. 1/25/2016 Car has served my well, but I have the Tesla itch and I need to sell. Will entertain any reasonable offer. This is my first ev conversion. And would welcome any ideas or suggestions. Thanks ahead of time. Jeff |
