PROJECT CONCEPT: A quiet, fuel efficient boat for exploring inland waterways in relative comfort and safety; with capacity to launch and retrieve on a trailer for transporting overland from one waterway to another; comparable to six meter caravan like amenities in an eight meter boat. SPECIFICATIONS: Strong plate alloy hull; pop-up roof for low wind resistance when towing; all around screen canopy for maximum vision, cooling, and insect protection; 24 V lithium battery bank; two 2 kW permanent magnet motors on propeller shafts (no gearing); and a 4 kVa marine diesel generator. OPERATION: The two electric motors propel the boat to a top speed of 10 kph, with capacity to travel slowly on battery power for 3 - 5 hrs until the generator is required to power the motors and recharge the batteries. The generator runs at its most efficient rpm supplying 240vac to the inverter/charger until the batteries are fully charged. The 2,400 kilometer journey down the Murray River from Yarrawonga to Goolwa lasted 127 days and used approximately 260 liters of diesel. |
