Vehicle | 1977 Jeep CJ-7 7/15/13: 1977 Jeep CJ-7 began all white and (of course) gas powered. Began project in June 2012 when I pulled the engine, exhaust, gas tank, radiator, etc and sold them on Craigslist. Ordered a full DC conversion kit from Electro Automotive in Santa Cruz, Ca, but unfortunately never received the majority of my order from them. They still owe me about $7,000 in parts (including the motor and controller). Will be taking them to court this fall. Moth-balled the project for the year and am about to pick it back up now that I've built up the finances to acquire more parts. Next week I plan on disassembling the entire Jeep, and taking the hood, body panels, grill, body tub, roll bar, hard- top, etc in to have the entire thing coated inside and out with line-X truck bed liner. While the body is gone and I effectively am just left with a frame I plan on re-building the transmission and buying a motor and controller from someone I know locally that has what I'm looking for, but canceled his plans to do a conversion on a Fiero. |
Motor | Netgain NetGain WarP9 Series Wound DC 9" DC motor. |
Drivetrain | Original ICE: 304 cubic inch AMC V8 with Tremec T-150 three speed manual transmission and Dana transfer case. I'll be keeping the transmission and transfer case, but the engine has found a better home. |
Controller | Curtis Curtis 1231C 96-144VDC 500A peak, pulse-width modulated (PWM) controller. |
Batteries | 0.00 Volt, Not sure which batteries I'm going with yet. I'd like to do two 72V banks of LiFePO4. |
System Voltage | 144 Volts |
Charger | A lot of battery systems I'm looking at purchasing come with the charger... |
DC/DC Converter | I think I'm going to pass on the DC/DC converter. The Jeep won't have an air conditioner or stereo. The 12V system will pretty much just power the lights, and I'm planning on converting all of them over to LEDs. Rather than drawing off the main battery pack, I have a solar panel I'm planning on hooking up to the 12V and just letting it charge all day in the sun while I'm at work. I'll almost never be driving in the dark and pretty much just need brake lights and turn signals. If it looks like this is something I can't live without, I'll add one later on. |
Seating Capacity | 4-ish. Two adults in the front, but I wouldn't try to put adults in the back. |
Update 08-02-13: Spent the week completely stripping everything out of the jeep down to the last wire behind the dashboard. Towing it in today to have it completely coated in Line-X truck bed linder. The majority of the Jeep including the body tub will be a beige tan color, while the roll bar and hard top will be plain black. Should be done next Wednesday or Thursday. Will post picks of how it turns out. |
