Vehicle | 2013 KM Bikes - Chopper prototype One of two prototypes. Long wheelbase, overal length 235 cm
Motor | Unknown, it just says EV Bike on it... Brushless DC Rear hub motor, supplied by GWL, Czech Republic, Chinese origin. I trust the supplier, they have very good reputation and customer support.
Drivetrain | Brushless hub motor
Batteries | 1, 36.00 Volt, Lithium Iron Phosphate It's one of those new 1,5-litre bottle-look batteries 7Ah, only 6 kilos.
System Voltage | 36 Volts
Charger | Got it in the kit, no markings.
Heater | The sun got me real good today, I'm all red :)
Instrumentation | LCD display, on-board computer for adjusting the pedal assist level, check speed, distance.
Top Speed | 15 MPH (24 KPH) Limited to EU legal limit 25 km/h. If you go too fast people don't have time for admiring how cool you are :) This is a cruiser bike, no need to go fast.
Acceleration | Quite fast.
Range | 20 Miles (32 Kilometers) Personally I don't use pedal asssist, only use motor for uphill or when I have to pull at traffic lights fast. Otherwise this bike doesn't need motor at all. On straights I pull up to 12 miles and pedal lightly, and when speed falls under 10 mph I use motor for maybe 1 second to push me to 12. This way range is off the scale, you can do this for miles and miles without even breaking a sweat.
EV Miles |
| ||
Seating Capacity | 1. seat, but we tested its strength - it is capable of carrying 2 persons (one on the backbone in front of driver, legs on the pedals, driver only uses electric propulsion). Frame strong enough to install a rack and sissybar at rear and to have 2 seats, and long enough for another set of pedals for the second rider.
Curb Weight | 60 Pounds (27 Kilograms) The bike is some 12 kg's lighter without battery and motor.
Tires | 24", 3" wide | ||
Conversion Time | 4 months of finding suppliers, built from scratch, frame and all... It takes us a week to get parts by mail from Germany, Czech Republic an Netherlands, but when all parts are together it takes 8 man hours to build, no rush.
Conversion Cost | Around 3000 Euros. Production versions will cost from 2700 to 4000 Euros depending on customer's wishes.
Additional Features | This is one of the two prototypes we are testing right now. The basic philosophy is the same as Harley-Davidson: you buy the frame and then decide which parts, materials, colour schemes, accessories ... you want. Today I spoke to a jeweler, he said he'd make one for the Saudis, all in gold and diamonds. I guess I'd send them one to make them a bit scared of what is to become with their oil empire ... :)
The bikes ride surprisingly easy at all speeds, even at walking pace it is totally stable. Although the tires are very wide for a bicycle, they touch the ground with less than 1 inch width and run smoothly, effortlessly and fast. Battery consumption is surprisingly low. Because the bike is basically recumbent bike, once you start, it is very easy to pedal, on straights much less effort than a 'straight' bike, also one is sitting much lower, improving the aerodynamics. In all, this is a very nice ride, just like a "proper" chopper, without the noise and smell. Today we defined it: it's a MOTORCYCLE STRIPPED OF UNNECESSARY BITS Another remark: I have problems with people stopping and watching the mike. Even cars in the middle of the road! Almost every day there's a situation when I have to break like crazy to stop in time in front of a car or a motorcycle that stopped to watch my bike. A trip through a tourist resort, 15 miles long, took us hours, because people were stopping us all the time. You feel genuinly FAMOUS, when riding this black beauty. |
