Vehicle | 1993 BMW 318I BMW 318I converted to electric for the main purpose of a daily commuter. My daily one way commute is 22 miles and I wanted an EV that looked good while giving 0 money to the oil companies. |
Motor | Advanced DC FB1-4001A Compound Wound DC |
Controller | Logisystems 144AFX 750Amp |
Batteries | 12 Trojan 1275, 12.00 Volt, Lead-Acid, Flooded |
System Voltage | 144 Volts |
Charger | Quick Charge Selectacharge 144V/110VAC Not sure how well this charger is going to perform in the long run but am giving it a fair chance. |
Heater | Future |
DC/DC Converter | Iota DLS 55 I really like this DC/DC. It puts out plenty of power for my car's 12V system. I did add a 12V SLA 17AHbattery to run the system until the contactors close and activate the DC/DC. |
Instrumentation | PakTrakr |
Top Speed | Not fully known yet. Will know once batteries are broken in. |
Acceleration | So far with a conservative setting on the controller acceleration is as good or better than the original 4cyl ICE. |
Range | Not fully known yet. Will know once batteries are broken in. |
Seating Capacity | 5 adults |
Conversion Time | 2 Months, a lot of this time was spent waiting on parts to arrive from the various vendors. |
Conversion Cost | $7500 |
Additional Features | Power steering is provided via a Toyota MR2 electric power steering pump with a custom pressure line feeding the original PS rack. Since this pump runs off of the 12V system it is ideal for an EV. |
One of the funnest projects that I have ever undertaken (and I've had plenty!)!! Looking forward to many more conversions. If anyone in my area would like to see the car just send me an email. I am also interested in doing conversions for others. |
