Vehicle | 1995 Volvo 850 |
Motor | Advanced DC FB-4001a Series Wound DC 19 HP continuous, 85 HP peak. This motor has a shaft on both ends: one drives the transmission the other drives the accessory assembly. |
Controller | Auburn Scientific PWC600-144 Kodiak Water cooled |
Batteries | 12 Deka 8A31DT, 12.00 Volt, Lead-Acid, AGM Each battery is rated at 105aH so the pack is rated at 15 kWh. However, with the Peukert effect, I am getting about 60% of that, or about 10 kWh. |
System Voltage | 144 Volts |
Charger | Zivan NG3 I used to have 12 individual Soneil 3 amp chargers, one for each battery. The advantage of this arrangement is that each battery is charged exactly how much it needs. The disadvantage is that it only adds about 1 mile per hour of charging, so it can take over a day to fully charge. Another disadvantage is that two of the chargers burnt out and those batteries were damaged before it was discovered. |
DC/DC Converter | Iota DLS-55 This is actually a 120VAC to 12VDC converter, but it works fine with the 144VDC battery pack as the source. |
Top Speed | 70 MPH (112 KPH) Probably will go faster, but this is the fastest I have gone so far. |
Range | 25 Miles (40 Kilometers) This was done with 5 miles of freeway driving and the rest around town with a maximum speed of 40 MPH. |
Watt Hours/Mile | 400 Wh/Mile Battery to wheel, gets about 2.5 miles per kWh. However the Soneil chargers are not very efficient so plug to wheel it gets only 1.6 miles per kWh (625 Wh per mile). |
Seating Capacity | 5 Adults |
Curb Weight | 4,300 Pounds (1,954 Kilograms) |
This is the same car as Ben Sharpe had, and has just had the batteries and charger replaced. (I added the DC-DC converter.) The car was originally converted by Ken Bancroft in Houston, TX from a brand new 850. |
